Bob picks up reggae from outer space on his toaster radio and finally tells Dub how it all started. 1976: a 19-year-old piano prodigy who played 4,000 notes in 3 minutes runs away from his own recital to Kingston, Jamaica, in a tuxedo. At the Black Lizard studio he plays way too fast... until the Prophet asks him for one note. And then wait. That night, somebody up there answered.
Bob: The Desert Tapes is a spin-off of Skeeter & Dunk. Bob, the keytar-and-theremin guy from Cosmic Mullet, lives in a cave in the Nevada desert with a lizard named Dub. Every tape tells a piece of his story. Never the whole thing.

Hold the antenna, Dub. ...Higher. ...Higher.
...Hehhhh. ...No. ...It can't be.
You wanna know... why an old man... lives in a cave... behind two idiots.
Okay. It was nineteen seventy-six. I had... ...shoes.
Ladies and gentlemen. Nineteen-year-old prodigy Robert Bobbington. Four thousand notes. Three minutes.
Show-off. Someday I'll be important, Bobbington. Someday my whole face will be classified.
What is that? What IS that?
That's Kingston, kid. They play the space between the notes.
I've never played a space. I don't even know where the spaces ARE.
ROBERT! Where are you GOING?
...The radio told me.
You came from America. In a tuxedo. To play reggae.
I'm a prodigy, ma'am. I can play six hundred notes a minute.
Good. We need one.
Little man plays like he's late for a bus.
...Two buses.
Every night, same thing. Too fast. You play like somebody's chasing you.
...Somebody is.
...Prophet. You're early.
Time is a rumor, Ivy.
Play me one note.
One.
Now wait.
How long do I wait?
Until the desert tells you.
We're... on an island.
Not yet.
...Hehhh.
Who's playing that? Nobody's playing that.
...They finally answered.
Who?
The neighbors.
Keep this. Don't play it. Not until the desert tells you.
What do I do with the lizard?
He'll tell you. His name is Dub.
Dub. ...Is it time?
Hehhhh. ...Not yet.
...Always.
Phil. The hippie in the cave is talking to space again.
Log it as weather.
There's a file on him. "Project Bobbington." It says... "Do not let him play the tape."
